Regular, gentle dusting is a sensible starting point for caring for artificial flowers. The safest method depends on the petals, surface finish and construction, so follow the instructions supplied with your arrangement first. A real touch or silk label does not establish whether an item can be washed.
Start with a gentle dry clean
- Move the vase to a stable surface with enough room to work. Note the position of the stems before removing anything.
- Support each flower near its head rather than pulling on the petals.
- Use a clean, very soft brush to lift dust from the surface. Work lightly from accessible outer areas towards the folds.
- Wipe the vase separately with a method suitable for its material, keeping moisture away from the flowers.
- Return the arrangement to its position and check that the stems are supported.
For a tightly layered bloom, use light strokes over the visible surfaces. Trying to force a brush deep into the centre can distort petals or loosen small parts. If dust does not lift easily, stop and ask the supplier for material-specific advice.
Can you wash artificial flowers?
Only use water when the product's care instructions allow it. Water can affect some dyes, coatings, adhesives and exposed wire. Avoid soaking an arrangement or putting stems in a dishwasher. Do not assume that a plastic-looking leaf means the complete stem is waterproof.
Household cleaners, solvents, fragranced sprays and abrasive cloths may affect the finish. Test any supplier-approved method on an inconspicuous area first and allow it to dry before continuing. When the composition is unknown, gentle dry dusting is the more cautious starting point.
Keep the colour and shape looking their best
Place indoor arrangements away from sustained intense sunlight, radiators, open flames and damp conditions. Do not treat an indoor flower as suitable for outdoor use unless the seller confirms that use. If colour fastness or UV resistance matters for your chosen spot, ask about the specific product.
Reshape stems only where the construction allows it. Support the bend with your hands and make small adjustments rather than repeated sharp bends at the same point. Avoid applying heat to petals to change their shape.
