An arrangement can look beautifully balanced in a photograph and still feel too large on your own console. Start with the place it will live. Three measurements matter: the total height, the widest part of the flowers and the space the vase needs on the surface.
Measure the space before the flowers
Clear the surface and measure its usable width and depth. Account for a lamp, keys, books or anything that needs to stay. Then measure the clear height to a shelf, artwork or mirror. The flowers may overlap a mirror visually, but should not be pressed against glass or frame.
Use a piece of paper to mark the vase footprint. A second, wider outline made with a tape measure helps you imagine the flower canopy. Check the arrangement from the doorway as well as from directly in front: a display seen from across a room often needs a different outline from one seen at arm’s length.
Ask for the right dimensions

Do not infer exact scale from a room image. Furniture and camera perspective vary. If a listing gives only stem length, ask for the finished arrangement dimensions and whether those include the vase.
Use proportion as a starting point
For an upright loose-stem display, try a finished height around one and a half to twice the vase height, including the vase. This is a visual starting point, not a requirement. A low bowl, wide hydrangea display or dramatic branching arrangement can work outside it.
Width matters just as much. A small opening can hold stems upright; a wider opening lets them spread. A vase that looks substantial enough may still be unstable if the flowers lean heavily to one side. Test the balance before leaving the display in place.
Check the room in use
- Sit down at a dining table and check you can see the person opposite.
- Open nearby doors and drawers fully.
- Keep flower tips away from routes through the room.
- Leave kitchen preparation and everyday landing space clear.
- Check a tall display does not obscure a lamp or sit close to heat.
