Flowers on a dining table need to work at seated eye level. A display that looks impressive in an empty room may become awkward when plates, glasses and serving dishes arrive. Plan the table in use, then choose the arrangement.
Start with sightlines
Sit in a dining chair and look towards the seat opposite. Check the view from the ends of the table too. A low display can keep conversation clear; a taller arrangement may suit a sideboard or be moved off the table when you sit down.
Do not rely on a universal height limit. Chair height, table dimensions and the openness of the flowers all change the effect. An airy branch can be less obstructive than a dense flower head at the same height, but the practical test is whether people can see comfortably across the table.
Leave room for the meal
Set out a normal place setting and any serving dishes before deciding on a vase footprint. On a round table, a central arrangement is visible from every angle. On a long table, one compact focal point may work better than spreading objects along the entire centre.
Keep petals and leaves clear of food and glassware. Make sure the vase cannot be nudged easily by a plate or an elbow, and protect the tabletop where the vase base could mark it. Keep all artificial flowers safely away from candles and other heat sources.
Use colour to set the atmosphere
White and ivory feel calm against linen, stoneware and timber. Soft pink adds warmth without needing matching plates. Pale blue and green can make a neutral table feel lighter. Choose a main colour, then repeat it once in another element rather than matching every object.
Consider evening light as well as daylight. Warm bulbs can change how cream, pink and white appear. Place the arrangement in the room at the time you most often use the table before deciding whether to add stronger colour.
Make the display easy to live with
- Choose a vase you can lift securely when clearing the table.
- Keep the lower part of the display tidy from every seated position.
- Avoid trailing stems that catch cutlery or sleeves.
- Dust regularly, especially close to places where food is prepared or served.
- If the arrangement is too tall for a meal, give it a nearby sideboard position.
